The piece

The frame is not carved: it is painted. Along a pale band runs a thin scroll, and at the center of the long sides a denser cartouche opens; the outer edge is dark and closes the design as a molding would, without being one. Painting a relief that is not there means holding the same light over the whole band, because the eye corrects it at once if the false relief changes direction halfway.

One meter seventy-four wide by one meter seven: it is large, and it goes above a sideboard or a fireplace. The antiqued finish is one that is dirtied on purpose — dark glazes passed on and then taken off — and it serves to take from the white that much newness that jars in an old room.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
