The piece

The whole band is pierced: an interlace of scrolls and leaves that runs round all four sides and at the corners knots on itself. Between one solid and the next the wall shows through, and the mirror changes weight according to the wall it hangs on. On a dark ground the design stands out; on a pale ground it almost disappears, and only the outline is left.

Seventy-seven by ninety-seven: small, and in proportion more work goes in here than on a large frame, because the voids are close together and each has to be opened without cracking the two beside it. The antiqued gold is knocked back with a dark glaze, which gathers by itself in the piercing and draws the shadow.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
