Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

A hundred and thirty-five by fifty-eight: a real desk, not a side table with a drawer. The body is ivory with gilded edges, three drawers in the frieze and tapered legs; the chair 5010 stands beside it in polished walnut, and the two woods are unlike each other on purpose.

Eighty centimeters to the top — the height you write at, which is the same as a dining table and is not up for negotiation. The fifty-eight centimeters of depth are what it takes for your knees to go under without touching the center drawer, and that is the point where a handsome desk becomes a usable one.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
