Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

Among the workshop's bathroom units this is the straight one: two flat doors inside a molded frame, no bowing and no curves. The mecca-glazed silver leaf decoration sits inside the panels and on the central rail, and the rest is antique white. The foot is low and shaped, barely lifted off the ground.

A flat front hides nothing: a molding half a millimeter out of square shows completely, while on a curve it is lost. One hundred and ten by fifty-two, eighty-five high — the size that fits an ordinary bathroom, where the unit has to sit between a door and a wall and there is no room for a bow front.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
