The piece

A hundred and twenty-five centimeters wide and a headboard that rises to a meter fifty-five: on a single bed that is an unusual proportion, and it is there to give the bed the weight of a double in a room where a double will not fit. The frame is carved and gilded, and at the top center it lifts into a cresting.

Two meters five long. On a tall headboard the capitonné works vertically: the buttons at the top pull the whole weight of the padding downwards, and they have to be fixed to the frame and not only to the canvas, or after a few years the top empties out.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
