Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

The headboard is a pink capitonné: the fabric is drawn and fixed button by button, and every button pulls four folds that all have to reach the same depth. It only takes one sunk half a centimeter more than the others for the grid to look crooked from anywhere in the room. Above runs a shaped wooden frame gilded in gold leaf, which rises at the center into a shell.

One hundred and twenty-two wide, two hundred and ten long, and the headboard reaching one hundred and thirty-seven from the floor. The gilding is laid in leaf, one sheet at a time, and on the curves of the frame the leaf has to be made to adhere without tearing: where it tears it shows, because under the gold there is red bole and the red comes through.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
