The piece

One meter eighty-five of almost plain front, with the doors in hazel and the sides in mother-of-pearl white. At the center, a carved roundel in oxidized silver, straddling the two doors and holding them together: it is the only relief on the piece, and it divides them and joins them at the same time.

A carving that straddles two doors means the doors have to be worked side by side and never swapped again: the center line of the roundel falls on the closing rebate, and a millimeter out is enough to make the circle look broken. Sixty centimeters deep, one meter six high — a height for putting things on, not for a dining room.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
