Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

Three panels across the front, and on each of them a bunch of leaves modeled in relief before any color reaches it: you can tell from the shadow the leaves cast on the ground, which is not painted. The body is two meters fifteen long, with the plinth set back and the top projecting above a dentil band; at the feet the profile opens into two low volutes.

Antica Firenze is not a color, it is a way of finishing. The colors are natural and are sealed with wax, not varnish, so the surface stays matt and absorbs the light instead of sending it back. The difference shows over the years: wax can be gone over again, and the piece is as it was; synthetic varnish, once it starts to flake, has to come off completely before anything else can be done.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
