Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

The front is curved, not flat: the doors follow a line that draws back at the center, and the top above them goes with it. It is the difference that costs most in the joinery, because a curved door cannot be cut from a flat board — it has to be built on the curve and then decorated over the curve, with the brush never finding a surface to rest on.

Over the dove gray of the ground run the hand-painted decorations, blue and brick, one scroll per door opening upwards and closing at the bottom. One hundred and seventy wide by one meter three high — the height of a surface to put things on, not of a dining-room sideboard. Natural colors and waxes: the wax goes into the wood instead of sitting on top of it, and years later it comes back to life by going over it again.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
