Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

Forty centimeters deep: the measure for a narrow hallway, where a deeper piece would take away the passage. The front is a drop-front that opens forwards and becomes a surface, and above it sits the real top, ninety-five off the ground. On the front the ocher decoration runs down the center and leaves the sides clear.

A drop-front has to be calibrated to the stays that hold it: open, it is a cantilevered shelf carrying its whole weight on its own, and if there is play in the hinges it drops on one side. The distressed mother-of-pearl is laid on and then taken away with a rag until the ground shows through in patches: once it has set, what is left is what there is.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
