The piece

The top is a half-moon: straight against the wall, curved at the front. Below, a single drawer inside a carved band, and two scrolls that cross and come down to the floor closing in a scroll foot. The piece has a single support, and all its stability is in the crossing of the two curves.

Sixty-five by thirty-five, fifty-two high. Thirty-five centimeters is little for a bedside table, and it is the reason for the half-moon: the curve gives back at the front the space the wall takes away, and at the same time it leaves the passage between the bed and the wall clear.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
