Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

The top drawer is worked in raised diamonds, the others stay plain: the decoration is all in a single band, at the top, where the eye arrives first. Below, the front runs straight down and the base opens into a shaped profile.

The mother-of-pearl rag finish is laid on and then taken away with the rag until the ground shows through in patches — and on raised diamonds the difficulty doubles, because the rag catches the ridges and skips the hollows, and where it skips the color stays heavier. One meter thirty-three for the chest of drawers, fifty-five for the bedside table, and the same band on both.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
