The piece

One meter twenty of curved front over three drawers, with the top following the curve and the corners chamfered. At the center of each drawer there is a plate in antiqued silver leaf, and at either side two drop handles: three points in a row on each drawer front, and they are all aligned on the same vertical.

One meter two high is more than an ordinary chest of drawers, and it changes how it is used: you stand in front of it, and the top becomes somewhere to set things down rather than a surface to look at from above. The bedside table 548 repeats the same curved front in fifty-eight centimeters, with two drawers instead of three.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
