The piece

Three drawers over one meter thirty, the shaped top projecting, and below a carved apron that drops at the center and joins into the legs. The handles are metal straps with worked backplates, three to each drawer.

Shadow is not a color that is laid on: it is a dark glaze that is passed on and taken off at once, and it stays only where the wood recedes. It serves to show the carving without darkening it, and on a shaped apron it is what separates the curve from the ground. Sixty centimeters deep and one meter seven high, which is the height of a piece you put things on standing up.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
