Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

The front is straight and the sides taper downwards, to a pointed foot. On each drawer the handle is a horizontal bar in mecca-glazed silver leaf with worked ends, and it is the only relief on an otherwise smooth surface.

Forty-seven centimeters wide for the bedside table, one hundred and nine for the chest of drawers: these are the measurements of an ordinary bedroom, where the bedside table has to fit between the bed and the wall. A piece with no decoration is judged on the gaps between the drawers, and on three drawers opened every day the gap has to stay the same in winter and in summer — wood moves, and the play has to be left in the workshop.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
