Designed, built and finished inside the workshop, in Tavarnelle Val di Pesa.

The piece

The decoration is not painted over the lacquer: it is cut into it. On the doors the scrolls are gouged out of the wood and then gone over in umber and silver, so what you see is a groove that catches the light on one side and stays dark on the other. Close up you can feel it; from across the room it looks like a drawing.

Cutting is the opposite of painting: a wrong stroke cannot be covered, because the wood taken away does not come back. On a front of two meters ninety-five the motif repeats at the corners of every panel, and every repeat has to have the same depth, or the first shaft of sunlight will show which one was done last. Sixty-eight centimeters deep, and two meters fifty-six tall.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
