The piece

The design on the doors is a single one and straddles both of them: an acanthus scroll that starts at the bottom, widens at mid-height and closes at the top, cut through the middle by the meeting edge. It means the doors cannot be worked separately and then put side by side — the relief has to be modeled when they are already a pair, and if the meeting edge shifts by a few millimeters the design no longer comes back together.

The ground is dusty blue gone over with wax, and the cornice at the top is stone-colored: two close tones, which at a distance make the piece read as one and separate up close. One meter ninety wide by two meters thirty high, seventy deep.

How it is made

The finish is the craft: lacquer and gold leaf are the two steps almost everyone subcontracts, and here they stay in house.

The workshop

L'ARTES

An art furniture workshop in Sambuca, founded in Firenze, in San Frediano, in 1968 by two young artisans trained by the masters of woodcarving. The whole cycle stays inside: the drawing, the unfinished piece, the lacquering, the decoration and the hand gilding. Three lines — Classico, Contemporary and Antica Firenze — and every piece built to the measurements of whoever orders it.
