Heart pendant in openwork silver with lozenges enclosed by burgundy enamel, chain included
Twelve grams forty of silver pierced in lozenges, every lozenge filled with bordeaux enamel: held against the light the color turns to red.
Drawn and built by hand at the bench, in Tosi.
A silver heart domed on both faces, hollow inside. The sheet is not solid: it is pierced in a close lattice of identical lozenges, set three by three around the same vertex, so that each set of three reads as a little cube seen corner on and the whole face becomes a row of cubes leaning against one another; where three cubes meet, the silver left between the lozenges draws a six-pointed star. Every lozenge is filled with bordeaux enamel, which stops just below the edge of the metal and stays slightly convex: at rest it is an almost black aubergine, and held against the light, where the light comes in through the voids of the opposite face, it catches fire in orange-red. The ribs between one lozenge and the next stay polished silver, and they are the only thing that picks up direct light. Around it runs a plain band with no holes, and at the top on the right lobe are the hallmarks. The bail is a wide plate that narrows as it rises, scored with parallel grooves; below it, a single ring holds the heart and lets it swing. The chain is rolo, with round links.
Twelve grams forty of silver at nine hundred and twenty-five thousandths — the company states one weight only, without saying how much of it goes to the heart and how much to the chain — for a heart of twenty-seven millimeters by thirty-nine, measured with the bail. The chain is included in the price: silver, forty-three and a half centimeters, named by the company together with the pendant. The enamel, the company says, works on both sides of the heart: it closes the lozenges on one face and on the other, and the piece has no good side and no side to hide. Which enamel it is is stated nowhere, and we do not write it in: the families are different techniques, and they cannot be told apart from a photograph. The color is the fragile part in any case: the pendant comes off before detergents and solvents, and it does not go into the ultrasonic bath. Presentation box included.

How it is made
The words of the trade, one by one, explained to those who do not know them.
- Openwork
- The metal is drilled and then cut out from the inside with a very fine saw, until the solid sheet becomes a drawing of voids. It is a technique that allows no second attempt: what is taken away does not come back.
- Mesh work
- The piercing does not make a single hole: it makes a regular net, and every link has to carry the weight of the others. Getting one cut wrong means weakening the whole net.
- Enamel
- Enamel is glass: ground to a powder, laid on the metal and taken to several hundred degrees until it melts and becomes one surface with the piece. Before the fire it is wet powder that a breath will move; afterwards it cannot be retouched, because correcting one point means putting all the color already fired back into the fire, and at every pass you risk a bubble, a cooling crack and the color turning. The families have names of their own and are told apart by how the metal holds the color: champlevé, when the color sits in recesses cut into the sheet; cloisonné, when it sits inside little walls of wire soldered to the ground; cold enamel, when instead of glass there is a resin that hardens without fire. They are different techniques, and they are not attributed by eye.
I don't look at what others are doing: I would rather create in my own style. That is what makes our jewelry recognizable.

Made for you
Every piece leaves the bench made to order: sizes and details are agreed before the work begins.
The goldsmith's workshop is also the place where made-to-measure jewellery is created and family pieces are restored: if you have an idea, or something you want brought back to how it was, that is where it starts.
A goldsmith's workshop in Tosi, on the slopes of the Pratomagno: Anna opened it in 1988, her sons Fabio and Francesco carry it on. Piercing, repoussé, chasing and burin engraving — the Florentine school, with the workshop in full view of the shop.
