Smooth framed silver pendant with reproduced Roman bronze coin, leather cord

Twenty millimeters exactly, frame included, on a plaited leather cord.

The frame is a wide, smooth silver ring, mirror-polished, and the bronze coin sits inside it lower than the rim: the pale metal makes a full circle all around the dark one, and there is no other decoration. On the coin you can read a helmeted head in profile, facing right, and the relief pulls towards copper where the light catches it. Turning the pendant over you see the other face of the coin, held at the back by a few folded silver tabs. The cord is plaited black leather, and a grooved silver bail runs above the pendant.

Seven grams and seventy is the declared weight of the mounted pendant, between the silver at nine hundred and twenty-five thousandths of the frame and the bronze disc. With the frame the pendant measures twenty millimeters exactly across, and the cord comes to forty-eight centimeters. It is the only one in the family worn on leather: the other pendants sit on silk or on rubber. The coin is a reproduction of a Roman coin; the company does not say which, and we do not add it. It arrives in its own gift box.

Technique
Made entirely by hand in the company's studio: the frame turned on the lathe and polished, the coin set beneath the line of the rim and held by tabs folded over at the back, the leather cord included.

How it is made

Reproduced Roman coin
The coin is not antique: it is a reproduction of a Roman coin, made in bronze or in silver depending on the piece. What is reproduced is a low relief — a head in profile, a few letters along the rim — and in a low relief a tenth of a millimeter is the whole difference between an outline that reads and a smudge. The blank that comes out is not a flat disc: it is higher at the center than at the edge, and the edge itself is not an exact circle. That is what decides the mount. The frame closes on the rim, where the metal is steadier and where there is no design to cover, and it is tightened cold — a flame passed over the field of the coin would flatten exactly the relief it is being mounted for, and a flattened relief does not rise again.

I don't look at what others are doing: I would rather create in my own style. That is what makes our jewelry recognizable.
