A marquise peridot of one carat seventy-eight, suspended between two gold bands that never touch.

Two gold bands run side by side along the finger, one white and one yellow, with flat sides and sharp edges. At the top they separate, and each one ends cut clean; in the gap between the two ends sits the peridot, a green marquise set crossways, held by two yellow gold claws that grip its points. On the white band, just above the stone, a single diamond is set flush with the metal.

Nine grams of eighteen-carat gold, in the two colors. The peridot comes to one carat seventy-eight; the diamond two points, color F and clarity VVS. The white and the yellow are not a finish applied on top: they are two distinct golds, soldered one beside the other, and under the flame they do not behave the same way. The stone does not rest on a solid back: it hangs in the gap between the two bands, held only by the claws at its two points, which are also the part of a marquise that chips.

How it is made

The words of the trade, one by one, explained to those who do not know them.

Two golds on the same piece: White and yellow have different hardnesses and soldering temperatures: mounting them together means working two metals that do not react the same way under the flame, and making them meet without the joint showing.
Marquise cut: An oval drawn out into two opposite points, with the facets running towards the long axis. The two halves have to come out symmetrical, because in a marquise the eye reads the axis at once and a point off center can no longer be corrected. And the points are the place where the stone chips: that is why it is there that the mount has to cover it.
Brilliant cut: Fifty-seven facets calculated so that the light entering from above comes back from the same side. It is the cut that makes a diamond sparkle, and the reason a badly cut diamond stays dull.

I don't look at what others are doing: I would rather create in my own style. That is what makes our jewelry recognizable.
