The piece

Hand-painted ceramic Christmas bauble, 8 cm diameter.

How it's made

A one-person workshop, where every piece goes through all the stages without ever changing hands.

  1. She throws on the wheelThe form comes from the wheel she learned at Montelupo: it is the gesture that turned a decorator into a complete ceramist, in command of the piece from the raw clay onwards.
  2. She decorates like a painterMaiolica was her first language and it shows: full colors, living surfaces, the palette borrowed from the hills outside the window.
  3. She knots the macraméThe hanging vases travel with the weave that holds them, and the macramé is not bought by the meter: she makes it herself, knot by knot, to the measure of the piece.
  4. She gives the little bells a voiceThe wind chimes are a family affair: the sounding inserts come from her husband's hands. Every bell comes out with its own voice, not with a standard sound.

The workshop

Kerstin Rauch

Kerstin Rauch works clay in a small studio on the hills of Reggello, in the province of Firenze, where the window looks out over the olive groves. The colors and textures of that landscape are the matrix of what comes out of the kiln: she says so herself, and you can see it.

She has always liked everything that hangs — plants, bells, suspended objects — and half the production came from there: the wind chimes, the plant hangers, the jellyfish that hold the tillandsias, the bird feeder. The other half sits flat: hand-painted tiles, plates, spoons, incense holders, cat-shaped salt cellars.

In her workshop, she says, “everything turns: the wheel, the ideas, and often me as well”.
