Il pezzo

The mother-of-pearl gray candle jar, fifteen centimeters, photographed closed: with the conical lid resting on top and the knob, it looks like a pantry container, and that's exactly what it becomes when the wax is gone.

Thrown on the wheel, glazed and fired. The lid is a separate piece, and its seat needs to be adjusted so that it rests flat.

Come nasce

Handmade maiolica: thrown on the wheel, glazed, fired. Three gestures, no shortcuts.

  1. She throws on the wheelThe forms are born turning. It is the gesture that decides the thickness of the walls, and so the lightness you feel in your hand before you know why.
  2. She chooses the glazeSix shades each with a name of its own, from snow white to sea blue. On maiolica the glaze is not a paint on top: it is glass that fuses with the clay.
  3. She firesThe fire is the one step that cannot be corrected. What goes into the kiln is a bet; what comes out is the piece.
  4. She paints the flowersFor the Florentia line the ceramic gets small: daisies, flowers, butterflies and buttercups, modeled and painted at earring scale.

L'atelier

Eva Munarin

EVA MUN is the ceramics atelier of Shikha Eva Munarin, in Via di San Niccolò, in Firenze's Oltrarno a few steps from Ponte Vecchio. The work is handmade maiolica: thrown on the wheel, then glazed, then fired. Two collections take two different things out of the atelier — Light and Color, which is tableware and furnishing, and Florentia, which is ceramic jewelry.

The training is double and it is not a redundancy: a design diploma from NABA in Milano, a ceramist's diploma from the Scuola di Ceramica in Montelupo Fiorentino. One school teaches why the handle goes there and not three centimeters higher; the other teaches what fire does to glaze. The wheel does not repeat millimeters, glaze never spreads the same way twice, the kiln does not treat two firings as twins: no piece comes out identical to another.
