Thrown on the wheel, glazed and fired by hand by Eva Munarin, in Firenze.
The piece
The cylindrical glass in teal green enamel. This is the color where the difference between the outside and the inside is most noticeable: outside it remains dark and compact, inside, where the light bounces off the curved wall, it lightens by one shade.
Ten by nine, thrown on the wheel, enameled and fired.
How it's made
Handmade maiolica: thrown on the wheel, glazed, fired.
- Throws on the wheelThe forms are born turning. It is the gesture that decides the thickness of the walls, and so the lightness you feel in the hand before you know why.
- Chooses the glazeSix colours each with a name of its own, from snow white to sea blue. On maiolica the glaze is glass that fuses with the clay.
- FiresFire is the one step that cannot be corrected: what comes out of the kiln is the finished piece.
- Paints the flowersFor the Florentia line the ceramic gets small: daisies, flowers, butterflies and buttercups, modelled and painted at earring scale.

Eva Munarin
EVA MUN is Eva Munarin's ceramics atelier, in Via di San Niccolò, in Florence's Oltrarno a few steps from Ponte Vecchio. The work is handmade maiolica: thrown on the wheel, then glazed, then fired. Two collections take two different things out of the atelier — Light and Color, which is tableware and furnishing, and Florentia, which is ceramic jewellery.
The training is double: a design diploma from NABA in Milan, a ceramicist's diploma from the Ceramics School of Montelupo Fiorentino. One school teaches why the handle goes there and not three centimetres higher; the other teaches what fire does to glaze. The wheel does not repeat millimetres, the glaze never spreads the same way twice, the kiln does not treat two firings as twins: no piece comes out identical to another.
