This piece is one of a kind.

What you see in the photo is what arrives: it is painted and sewn by hand, not printed. If you want another, they make it again to order.

Hand-painted and hand-sewn by Marcella e Maria Teresa Lorenzi, in Empoli.

The piece

Twenty-eight by thirty-five, with hand-painted cats on cotton. It's the only item on the stall that doesn't come from the garden.

It arrives as a cover, without filling.

How it's made

From the drawing on the fabric to the last stitch. Not one step is done by machine.

  1. The drawingThe drawing comes first, freehand on the fabric. No transfer, no print: what you see is what was traced.
  2. The colorColors laid on with a brush. On linen and cotton the color goes into the weave, and from there it does not come back out.
  3. The needleThe cover is sewn by hand, edge by edge. It is the slowest step and the only one that does not show in a photograph.
  4. Without paddingIt arrives as a cover: you choose the padding, in whatever firmness you want. It is also why it travels light.

The workshop

Marcella e Maria Teresa Lorenzi

Two sisters, a kiln and raw clay. The passion started when they were children and took the serious road at the art school in Firenze; then life closed down a business and brought them back here, to ceramics, with the VAT number reopened and their hands in the clay.

They make two things that do not resemble each other: natural decorations and table centerpieces. All painted by hand, piece by piece, and fired slowly.

When it isn't earth it's cloth: linen and cotton painted and sewn by hand, with the same subjects that end up on the ceramics.
