The white doesn't stay still – as the light turns, pink, green, and blue pass through it. Above it is an silver cap that is not a sheet: it is a weave of thin branches, pierced and open in dissimilar voids, and each branch descends onto the shoulder of the pearl and ends in a small ball. From the cap, a longer branch runs down the front and widens at the bottom into a perforated collar with the same craters: inside, held by six claw settings ending in a small ball, is the tourmaline, a raspberry pink cabochon, domed and unfaceted – the light does not sparkle on it, it enters it, passes through its thickness and rises, carrying the color with it. The silver is oxidized in the recesses and re-polished only on the raised parts, as in all Marte pieces: the design comes forward through contrast.
